Your First Document
Learn the basics of creating and editing documents in Korppi.
Creating a New Document
From the Menu
- Click New in the left sidebar
- Or press
Ctrl+N
A new untitled document opens in a new tab.
From the Welcome Screen
When no documents are open, you'll see the Recent Documents panel:
- Click New Document to start fresh
- Or click a recent document to reopen it
The Document Tabs
Korppi supports multiple open documents:
- Each document appears as a tab at the top
- Click a tab to switch documents
- A red dot indicates unsaved changes
- Click × on a tab to close it
The Editor
The center of the screen is your writing space:

What You Can Do
- Type natural text with markdown formatting
- Format using toolbar buttons or shortcuts
- Right-click for context menu options
- Drag & drop images (coming soon)
Saving Your Document
First Save
- Press
Ctrl+Sor click Save - Choose a location on your computer
- Enter a filename (e.g.,
my-document) - Click Save
Your document is saved as a .kmd file.
Subsequent Saves
After the first save, just press Ctrl+S to save
instantly.
The .kmd File Format
Korppi uses a special file format called .kmd (Korppi
Markdown Document):
- It's actually a ZIP archive
- Contains your markdown content
- Stores the timeline history
- Includes comments and metadata
You can still export to standard Markdown or DOCX anytime!
Opening Existing Documents
From File
- Click Open in the sidebar (or
Ctrl+O) - Navigate to your
.kmdfile - Click Open
From Recent
- Look at the Recent Documents panel
- Click any document to reopen it
Double-Click
On your desktop, just double-click any .kmd file to open
it in Korppi!
Importing Documents
You can import content from other formats into Korppi.
Supported Formats
- Markdown (
.md): Imports text and formatting directly. - Word (
.docx): Imports text and formatting (requires Pandoc). - OpenDocument (
.odt): Imports text and formatting (requires Pandoc).
How to Import
- Click Import in the sidebar.
- Select your file.
- Korppi converts it to a new document.
[!NOTE] For Word (.docx) and OpenDocument (.odt) files: You need to have Pandoc installed on your system. If Pandoc is missing, Korppi will only extract plain text without formatting.
Setting Your Author Profile
Before you start writing, set up your profile:
- Click your avatar in the top-left
- Enter your name
- Choose a color (used for comments)
Your name appears in:
- Comments you create
- Document metadata
- Timeline entries
Autosave
Never lose work again!
- Find the Preferences section in the left sidebar
- Check Autosave
- Choose an interval (1-15 minutes)
When autosave triggers, you'll see a brief "✓ Autosaved" notification.
